Parks Worker - Maintenance Operations

The Maintenance Team works alongside the Maintenance Manager in performing maintenance tasks at the Buntzen Lake Recreation Area and assists with daily operations. The Maintenance Team is responsible for keeping Buntzen looking good and functioning well, with hazards recognized and addressed. They make sure our equipment is working, vegetation is managed, and facilities are kept in great condition. They are capable leaders and take a forward role in incident response, working closely with senior staff and setting an example for others.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitoring maintenance issues and recognizing / addressing safety hazards

  • Keeping detailed records of maintenance, equipment inventories, daily checklists, etc.

  • Cleaning washrooms, picnic tables, garbage bins, and performing other general upkeep tasks

  • Picking up litter and debris throughout the picnic area and trails

  • Patrolling the picnic area, beach, and trails to ensure the safety of the public

  • Communicating the area rules and regulations to the public to gain compliance

  • Driving a Ford F-550 and Dodge Ram work truck

  • Vegetation maintenance and landscaping

  • Working closely with the Maintenance Manager on repairs, construction, projects, etc.

  • Regularly checking and maintaining emergency response equipment

  • Taking part in and contributing to regular scenario training for incident response

  • Working closely with managers and supervisors to support daily operations and safety protocol

  • Taking an active role in daily safety tailboards and staff briefings

  • Providing traffic control and reservation assistance during the summer months

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong verbal skills and ability to maintain a friendly demeanor during public interactions

  • Mature, professional attitude and ability to take instructions and receive extensive training

  • Experienced in landscaping and vegetation maintenance

  • Proficient in repairs, construction, and general mechanical work

  • Detail oriented, able to understand and apply company policies, safety protocol, best work practices, etc.

  • Capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Self-motivated and able to stay on-task when not directly supervised

  • Good physical fitness; can walk or stand for prolonged periods of time and lift heavy objects, as well as hike long trails carrying equipment

  • Positive leadership capability, able to confidently direct and lead by example

  • Available to work 8 hour shifts between 7am - 9pm and work over-time in emergency situations

  • Capable of swimming to safety in unlikely event of water immersion

  • Valid class 5 BC Driver’s license with clean drivers abstract

  • A PCOC must be acquired if hired

  • WHIMS qualification is required if hired

  • Steel toed boots are required if hired

  • Additional training will be provided to successful candidates

PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS WHO ARE / HAVE...

  • Previous work experience in parks or outdoor recreation

  • Previously been employed to drive a vehicle or have driven trucks or other large vehicles

  • Qualified or experienced in first aid / emergency response / incident command (particularly OFA or ICS)

  • Fire suppression experience, including S-100 qualification or above

  • Chainsaw experience and relevant training certification (i.e. chainsaw safety fundamentals, falling and bucking, etc.)

  • Supervision or leadership experience

  • Knowledge / experience in Occupational Health and Safety (practices, legislation, implementation, etc.)

  • Experienced in enforcement, conflict resolution or violence prevention

  • Experienced in customer service / working with the public

  • Boating experience / qualifications

SCHEDULE

Part-time, permanent

8-24 hours/week

WAGE

$20.50 - 25.50 / hr  (based on experience)
